*Oliver Jones ~Jazz pianist, organist, composer, and arranger*

For this assignment we have to write a short report on an African Canadian. 20 people will be chosen out of 110 to read their reports on the annoucements each day in February for black history month.

I am doing my assignment on Oliver Jones. I saw him at the jazz festival in June and really liked his music.

Oliver Jones has become one of Canada’s finest pianist, organist, composer, and arranger. Born on September 11, 1934 in little Burgundy Montreal. At the age of 3 Jones heard a song once on the radio and played it from memory on the piano. Oliver first studied classical music with Mme Bonner in a church in little Burgundy. By age 5 he was performing publicly. He then did more studies with Oscar Peterson's sister “Daisy Peterson Sweeney" and continued lessons with her for 12 years. Most of his studies came from her. By the time he was 9 Oliver had his first night club appearance. Oscar Peterson was one of Jone's role models and friends. Oscar Peterson was also one of Canada's greatest jazz pianist and composers.

Jone's six decade musical career has been rich and varied.
He has done everything from classical to swing to rock n' roll in his career since jazz was not considered a viable career when he started preforming. Since he was a small child Jones wanted to be a jazz musician. When he was young he was famous for his classical music and was internationally famous for classical music into his twenties. In 1980 at the age of 46 his dream of being a jazz musician was finally within his reach. In 1964 he was presented with the opportunity to become musical director and pianist for Jamaican singer, Kenny Hamilton, a position which he held for sixteen years.

When I saw Oliver Jones preform at the Ottawa Jazz festival, he played the concert in two parts. The first part was music he had composed. The second part was a tribute to his good friend Oscar Peterson, who had recently died. It was a very emotinal concert for all watching and on stage. I was very happy to have experienced such an event of one respected Canadian musician doing a tribute to another great Canadian. As said by many, Oliver Jones is one of the greatest pianists in jazz history.

The time period one is based on assignment 3, i will probably make one for the other assignments we got too. If you have any questions please go ahead and post one. I would love it if i also got a few more comments too, because than i can know if i need to improve any thing on my blog, or it would be great to know if you enjoyed my assignments, well anyways catch you latter,

Sarah (or sometimes referred to as whippy)

p.s. I will be giving the results to each poll, and i would like to know if you think i should just post the results, and leave it for a few days, and than delete it , or should i keep it on my blog.

it-it-it's co-co-ol-ol-dddddd!!!

HELLO fellow classmates, Miss Pollock, and other viewer's.
This assignment (#5) is thinking about how the early settlers came to Canada. They didn't have any warm mittens , hats, boots or scarf's and stayed in Canada during the cold winters. How can the early settlers survive with no warm winter clothing?

We have to do research how early Canadians survived, and use a few links our teacher miss Pollock gave us. We have to Discuss some of the challenges early Canadians had to face due to the coldness of winter and we have to think about the things people need in order to survive and consider whether it was more difficult to get these
things in winter.
Then we:
-Write about how early Canadians learned to deal with the extreme cold
-Find out and write about how and why your family came to Canada
-Find out and write about how your family learned to deal with the extreme cold
-In your entry, include links to sites where you found your information, and quote at least two of the pieces of information you learned.

IT-IT-IT'S CO-CO-OL-OL-DDDDD!!!!!

Yes,it sure is cold here in Canada, a few days a go it was -40 with the windshield and if you stayed outside even for 10 minuets, you would get frostbite,Yikes!I wonder how in the world ,the first settlers survive in our cold winters, and settled: by making a house, jobs, traveled, Clothing wise and much more.

Why did immigrants want to come to Canada and settle here in the first place?

Immigrants wanted to come to Canada because the government had control over their way of living in their country, and they were not aloud to do a lot of things, and have a lot of freedom. There was also no jobs that payed good, so people were very poor. Some families were so poor that they can barley survive. As I mentioned people were not aloud to do much, but they were also forced to do things as well, the men had to serve in the army even if they didn't want to. Also cities were overcrowded, and were very dirty and polluted. Once everyone herd the government of CANADA was offering those settlers willing to settle on the prairie, free land, some people stated making there way to Canada. For many settles ,moving to Canada was an excellent opportunity to own their own land, and have a better lifestyle. "Some also moved to Canada because Canada had plenty of jobs available. Other's immigrated hoping to make money and buy land or start up a business."
All those things I know were sad, how people were forced to do things they didn't want to and many were on the edge of dieing. I think all of those settlers who decided to move to Canada made the right choice, also they were really brave to come to unknown land, and start living there life's, in this new country.

Arriving in the new country:

Once settlers arrived in Canada they could not go on and start to settle. "They were given medicals and their travel papers were checked over. During this time, they stayed in large buildings called immigration halls. Their next journey was by train to the prairies."
After settlers had to travel in train cars that were called " Colonial Cars."The journey was from Quebec to western Canada and it took about 4 to 6 days to reach there destination. A lot of the time trains had no heat and were overcrowded with people, they must have felt like they were back in the country, but hopefully they won't fell like that for long. While traveling there was a lot of delays, and
Passengers had to bring their own food, or buy food during the trip. Then after the rough trip they had reach there destination. Families unloaded all there items and bought all the things they would need to start there settlement.

Transportation: Once people got horses some also got a covered wagon. I covered wagon, was the only transportation back then besides walking, and by horse, and it could also transport more than one person, not like riding a horse, and Carrie multiple items.

This picture is from a pageant ( Little house in the prairie),of a covered wagon.

Building a home:
Some settlers started to live in a tent, until they could afford, or until they got the materials they needed to make there sod house and barn. Once settlers found the land they wanted to build their house on, and start there wheat crop they got right to work,it took many days of hard work until everything was ready. Winter was tough for pioneers because heat was not invented yet. They had to warm up by the stove, and use candle light at night. Some time food was a problem in the winter because it was hard for people to find animals to hunt. We are very lucky that now we have heat in our homes and lots of food to keep us satisfied in the winter time. Some time it was hard to get to the store to buy things they needed in the winter, as you know they had to walk and some time it would be several km's to get there and with the winter it was even more difficult. We are again very lucky we have cars now, it is still sometimes difficult to get to the store, but a lot easier than back then.

This picture is an example of a sod house, pioneers lived in.

School's:
Back then to get to a place you had to either walk or take the horse as I mentioned before. So when children had to go to school in the winter it was really changing, because they had to walk, now a lot of students get driven to school or take the bus. Children sometimes couldn't go to school because of blizzards, or bad weather conditions, some children if they had a mother who used to be a school teacher could teach them. There were not that many variety of jobs back then, and for women a school teacher was a good job, and one of the only jobs.

my families Generations

My family has been in Canada for the past 2 generations.

My mother was born in Ottawa, My father was born in Calgary,Alberta.
My Grandma on my Father's side was born in Montreal, My grandpa on my father's side was born in New York. My Grandmother on my Mother's side was born in ottawa, and my Grandpa on my Mother's side was born in Ottawa. So as you can see both my mom and dad were born in Canada , and most of my grandparents were born in Canada, expert for my Grandpa born in New York. My great grandparents on my mom's side were Canadian, and my great grand parents on my father's side were Canadian and American,Unfortunately they are no longer with us today, but I have herd wonderful stories about them.
This is were it gets interesting. Some people may have herd that I am a mix of a lot of Countries, but from what you read so far I am only Canadian, and a part American.
Well that's because my great great grand parents are all from different countries. Well let's start with my grandpa's parents on my dad's side. His father was from Russia and his mother was from Poland. My grandma's, mother was from England and her father was from Germany. Now my grandpa's parents on my mother's side was from china, and his mother was French Canadian. My grandma on my mother's side parents are from Scotland. I hope that was no to confusing for you.

How my family traveled to Canada and why(including with some points how they survived the cold winter's)

My grandpa(on my father's side)- He left the U.S. in his early adult years by himself and came to Canada because he didn't like the bad things that were happing in the states at the time. He disied to come to Canada because he herd it was a really nice place, and it was a pretty similar environment to were he was living in new York. He had a good life in Canada,he found a beautiful Young women that he found to his likings and actually got married to her and they had 2 kids,he also had 2 photography business.

My great great grandparents came to Canada because they wanted a better place to raise their children and for their children to have a good education. They had to come by boat to get here, and it probably took them a longer time because boats don't go that fast. It was really hard for some people to travel when it was winter time, including my Grandpa's parents on my mom's side. They had keep warm by staying close together huddled.

Assignment 4 - linking back to your peers.

This is just for other's to know what assignment 4 is about: For this assignment i had to comment on at less 3 classmates blogs, and say what I thought about their assignment 3 answering: What will Canada look like in 2109?

I enjoyed reading classmates blogs entry on what they thought Canada will look like in 2109 and I thought they were all great! Some had more afford put into it then others, but I still enjoyed them all.

I picked for commenting on: Santan's blog entry were she said: "I think it is quite important to stop and think about what happened way before we were born because the people in history are the people who made a change in what today would look like and how people think. "I think that is an interesting fact she said because not everyone stops and thinks about that. "

I also commented on Sandra's blog. What she said was: "No one knows the future and it will always be a mystery and it will remain that way until someone invents a machine that predicts the future. Isn't there a time where you ask yourself "What will the world be like when I die?" At times I would think of how different the world would be in the future."

I commented on Ryleigh blog too! This is was she has too say: "In 2109 there might be time machines- that actually work- and maybe even different life forms living on Earth!"

I commented on Helena blog and she said:

"First of all, I think that there would be less racism, even though there is not too much now, and all the governments, or at least most, would be successful and would know how to take care of their country. I think this because since Obama is black, and his plans are brilliant, and he will be running the #1 trade country in the world, presidents (and prime-ministers) of other countries will look up to him, not care that he's black, and follow his foot-steps, and so, racism will be less, and countries will be better at fixing their problems."

And last but not less i commented on Froher's blog, she said: "Since we have a lot of technologies right now in 2009, I think that we might have ten times more technology which would make human life easier. We might even be able to make babies using only the DNA of the parents, houses under water, robots as pets, and maybe even electronic houses containing all the safety you need."

I will give you a week or so to answer, and than i will post a new question, I will usually involve history (some what), but it is also a way just for readers that read my blog to be entertained! Well that's it for now.

History in the past and future!(This is my response to Assignment #3. )

Canada has gone though a lot of changes in the past few centuries.
Including: Are clothing style, Our way of living, Technology, Government, Transportation, Even a little how we look.

Technology and transportation:

As we can see Technology has grown a lot more from the past centuries.
Before 1900's we didn't have cars, people got around by horse and buggy.
In the 1800's pioneers made there own houses, now we pay people to build houses for others. Also in the past couple centuries people have managed to invent, the telephone ( a pretty neat invention because you can communicate to people from different parts of the world ), the airplane ( The airplane is a good invention because it's a quicker way to transport), The refrigerator( Is helpful because you can keep your food last longer) and also many more useful and neat inventions.

Lifestyle:

Pioneers also Had a different life style than now in the 2000's. Children started doing things at a younger age, like helping with chores, People back then also got married around 13-17 , but now people don't marry until there around 18-30.
Pioneers had to help run the family, and had tougher situations, not like today.

Government:

We should be thankful that Canada has such a well stabled government. ( not like some parts of the world, even today). Some countries can't leave there own country, not even for a vacation because they have a dictatorship which means the leader
doesn't let people got out of the country, because they think they won't return and if everyone left there would be know one left in the country.

Clothing style:

Are clothing style has changed SO much!

1600's:medieval sort of clothing
1700's:huge hats, ruffles, big dress skirts with wiring
1800's:Girls-wore dresses in floral patterns and bonnets. Boys-wore plaid shirts and pants with suspenders.
1900's:paisley, Victorian style, Russian looking
1920's:bob hair, blazers, lipstick on only the middle of your lips
1930's:cardigans, hats
1940's:Barret hats
1950's:poodle skits, polka dots, ruffles
1960's:Hippie(tie dye, bell bottoms, platform shoes, beaded jewelery)
1970's:Disco(metallic clothing, white pants, big hair)
1980's:leg warmers, tapered lag jeans, fishnet tights, converse
1990's:ripped jeans, over sized shirts, layers
2000's:now

It's interesting I find how the clothing style has changed a lot from 1920's to 1930's, 1930's to 1940's etc... but the style hasn't changed much from 2000 to 2009. I wonder if the style will change next year in 2010, or in the future. Also it's funny how things come back in style from various time periods. Example leg warmers( from 1980's), Fish net tights (from 1980's)

How we look:

Monkeys involved into humans, but what will humans involve into?
Well Helena and I think that humans will involve into aliens.
We think aliens are the future us (human beings) and that they can't remember being a human though, so they come to earth, and some time abduct humans because they want to find out more about us. Also if you don't believe it when you look at the stars you are looking in the past, because the stars exploded years, and years ago but still remain in space.I saw the movie " fire in the sky" it's a true story. It's about this man who gets abducted by aliens. I have also seen this movie that has NASA images in it, about UFOs. I do believe in aliens and i wonder if we will involve into them in the future?

Also just in the past few centuries, and even when my grandma was a little girl humans acted more mature at a younger age,and looked older than they are. My grandma tells me stories of when she was growing up and she also showed me a picture of her when she was 19, a few days before she got married. She looked like she was in her 20's though. As I mentioned pioneers were more helpful and helped with chores, they also looked older than they were and were more mature.

Things that I think will happen in the future:

- At this rate I don't think Earth will be here in the year 3000. People pollute way too much, and I think people should care for the earth more. We want are great grand children to be here, don't we? but I don't think that will happen in the next 100 years. I hope we can find a way to cut down on the pollution, so the earth won't be as polluted.

- I think in the future people would have found more ways to cure sicknesses and disease, like: Cancer, Aids etc...

- I am not sure about flying cars, but maybe! But people are already finding ways for cars to not run on gas, I think that would be a better because it would help stop global warming, and the air would be less polluted.

- I think Schools will teach differently because the things we have to learn in school has changed from pioneers times( they only learned reading, writing and arithmetic) and it has also changed from when my parents went to school. One night I asked my parents if they got a math question i had trouble with and they couldn't help me because the way the teachers though students was different than now a days, so that concludes way i think the ways of learning could change in the next 100 years.

- I also think people wouldn't be as racist, because it's died down a lot from a few decades ago. It's still pretty big, a specially in some countries, but in 100 years i think all kinds of people including: Blacks, Chinese, Italians, Mexicans etc... will have every opportunity as everyone else in the world.

- I also think in a 100 years there would be a woman priminister ( not including Kim Campbell who only ran for a few months) and a woman president.( The U.S. almost got a vise president (Sarah Palin ). Woman are also getting more opportunities as men. A while a go girls couldn't even go to school!( I think that was unfair, that woman couldn't have an education, everyone should be treated the same!)But i think in a 100 years people will be treated as the same, well I hope so.

- As my final point I would like to tell you what i think the technology will be like in the future. A lot of people think as the future, either a whole world of NEW technology. Or they either think of the future as a messed up world, and it will be domes day. I think neither of those things will happen in the future.
Hasn't the world go ton better each century?? Besides from wars such as world war 1,2the Korean war, the war of 1812 etc... and the hola caust and other bad things that happened, well i think so. There has been a lot of great things that happened, but most people just look back on the negative things that happened. I think the world will keep getting better and in a 100 years from now things will be a lot better than now, and will keep improving. As a mentioned above i don't think the world will be FULL of technology, but i do think there will be more inventions in the future, just not everything you look at will be a new invention , there will still have things we have now.I think there might be a few things invented in the next 100 years but not a lot.

Those are some things I think will happen in the next 100 years, and the later future.I hope you had fun reading my entry, and learned a few things as well! I wonder how 2109 will be like?? Please visit my
teachers blog and click on other peoples blogs to read what they have to say about 2109!

Talk to you latter! Please post of comment and tell me your feedback you thought on my entry, I know it's long but thanks for reading.
