Live Blogging with E7/8 + Thought of the week for April 5th- 12th

Hello everyone!

Today we are doing live blogging in class and doing some research on questions on Miss Pollock's blog . Then we are going to have a class discussion on April 7th and talk about the questions. My partner is Froher, she has a link on her blog to my blog of this post.

Here are the Questions:

1 .-How did the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway change Canada?

2. -What were some of the causes of the Red River Rebellion?

3. -What were some of the effects of the Red River Rebellion?

4.-What would life for a Canadian look like, feel like and be like at this time in our history? (1881-1885 - construction of the CPR, 1869 - Red River Rebellion)

*(we don't have to answer all the questions we just have to have enough information to be papered for the class discussion)

The Canadian Pacific Railways have a lot of impact on now a days.

Here' the Information on the Questions---

1.) Jot Notes for Question 1

-it provided people a better source of transportation

-It helped unify Canadians from see to sea.

- Manitoba became a province
- lots of innocent people dies because of making the railway.
- The railways were started in 1881 1865 and were finished in 1885.
-Now we don't really use the railway as much because we have quicker transportation,
but it was really useful back then, then caring things it wagons, and quicker to get places.
- So there are lots of benefits of making the railway but there are some things that were not good.

2.) Jot notes for Question 2

-The Hudson’s Bay Company withdrew its rule of Rupert’s Land On January 1869 and sold it to the Canadian government (for $1.5 million) without any consideration for the rights and lives of the people living there

-Canadian surveyors began to survey the Metis land around the Red River On June 1869, changing the land division from long, narrow strips to square township lots

-Louis Riel, future leader of the Metis on October 11, 1869 and stopped surveyors trespassing on Andre Nault’s land by stepping on their chains

-Riel formed the National Committee of the Metis, a council to decide how to protect the Metis’ land On October 18, 1869.

-Riel and the Metis captured Fort Garry On November 2, 1869, a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post in the Red River settlement, and set up a provisional government there

-Late November in 1860 Lieutenant-Governor William McDougall arrived at Red River settlement to govern the new territory and was stopped and sent away by a band of armed Metis.

-Hudson’s Bay Company’s land was now supposed to be ruled by the Canadian government On December 1,1869 but the transfer was postponed because of the uncertainty surrounding the Metis and Red River settlement situation.

-A group of armed Canadians including Thomas Scott, an Ontario man who was adamantly against the Metis and their ways, marched into the Red River settlement and tried to attack Fort Garry On January 1870,
The group was caught Riel put them in jail.

-Late January 1870

John A. Macdonald sent Donald A. Smith, a Canadian government messenger, to the Red River settlement to explain to the Metis how Canada intended to govern their colony and to report back to Ottawa on what the Metis wanted.

-Early February 1870
Smith returned to Ottawa, having pleased and relieved the Metis (for the time being)
He brought back with him the Metis’ Bill of Rights.

-Scott continued to cause trouble by threatening and insulting the Metis, Riel ordered him brought to trial in Late February 1870.

-After being found guilty of his charge, Scott was sentenced to die and executed by a firing squad, On March 4,1870.

-On March 11, 1870 the news has reached Ontario, E.
News of Scott’s death reached Ontario, English-speakers were outraged and demanded Riel be hanged for Scott’s murder

-July 15, 1870
Red River settlement was named Manitoba and entered into Confederation after Riel’s provisional government finally came to an agreement with Ottawa

-Late July 1870
MacDonald sent troops to the Red River area to prevent any further trouble
Some Ontarian troops decided to avenge Scott’s death by killing Metis who had been involved with his sentencing
Riel’s followers strongly advised him to flee for fear of his life and Riel left by horseback for the United States immediately
-The Canadian government thought that the farmland which belongs to the metis family were a great area for the the English-speaking people from Ontario to settle in. They didn't even ask the metis.
- The metis weren't taken seriously, so Louis Riel killed Thomas Scott to make Canadians understand that the metis should be taken seriously, They have rights.
- People were invading the metis lands.

Jot Notes for Question 3:

-Death of Louise Riel
(November 16 1885)
How he died-
He got hanged at his execution.
Why he died-
Well, when Louise Riel wrote the list of rights some people thought that it was evidence that he wanted to overthrow the government. So that's how this whole thing started When he started his own government, the Canadian Government saw it as a revolution which means they thought he wanted to overthrow the government and also, a man named Thomas Scott wanted to overthrow his government, and when they executed him for this, people blamed Riel for "killing" an "innocent" person, even though it wasn't really his fault. There were many things that he did that made other people hate him.
- Thomas Scott got executed

-The English-speaking Canadian thought that by killing Thomas Scott they were enraging anti-catholic and anti-french sentiment in Ontario.

- People were looking for Louis Riel just to kill him.

Jot Notes For Question Number 4:

- The appearance of the whole country in general would be different

- The landscapes, the mountains and the lakes would be different from today.
For instance to make the railway they had to break down most of the mountains to continue the railway.

- People worked harder back then, because they didn't have much technology, and useful tools to help them with jobs such as: Opening a can or bottle, There were know computer's so they had to write letters by hand and much more.

Here's the thought of the week:

"One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. -Albert Einstein "

I was going to post the thought of the week on Sunday since I have been putting it on that day,but since I was going to post this pot on Monday I thought why not just wait one more day and put the thought of the week on this post.

Thought of the week ( March 29th -- April 5th)

Hello!
How are you all?
So far I have been putting the thought of the week on Sundays, I will try my best to keep putting it on the same day, If i don't thought It will be a week from the day I give you the thought.

So here is the thought for this week:
" When the power of love over comes the love of power, the world will know peace."
- Jimi Hendrix

Ideas:
Questions to think about when I give you a thought of the week.
Example Question: "Take pride don't litter"
1. What is the message trying to tell me?
-Don't litter
2. From the message given what can I do this week to make the world a better place?
- If I see a piece of garbage on the ground I can pick it up and trow it in the garbage.
3. How you can spread the word?
- When a friend trows a can on the school yard, tell them the message and explain that it is not good to litter, and hopefully your friend will pick it up off the ground and put it into the recycling.
I am trying to make everyone a better person, so with these "thought of the week" I am hoping this makes you think about the message and what you can do to make you a better person.
- Cheers!

Movie Recommendation

Hi everyone!
I hope you are all having a great march break!

I would just like to quickly tell you all about a movie I saw last night.
It's called the boy in striped Pyjamas and it's about a two boys, one a German and the other a Jew that build a friendship over a wired fence during the time of the holocaust.

Description:

Young Bruno lives a wealthy lifestyle in Pre-war Germany along with his mother, elder sister, and army Commandant father. The family re-locate to the countryside where his father is assigned to commandeer a prison camp. A few days later, Bruno befriends another youth, strangely dressed in striped pajamas, named Shmuel who lives behind an electrified fence. Bruno will soon find out that he is not permitted to befriend his new friend as he is a Jew, and that the neighboring yard is actually a prison camp for Jews awaiting extermination.

Rated PG-13 for some mature thematic material involving the Holocaust.
Watch the trailer :
The movie is based on the book " The Boy in Striped Pajamas"written by: John Boyne.

Assignmnet 10 --Dairys and Letters of Chen Li

Special Letters, Diary entries,
pictures of the Li Family.

Chinese Flag: Hello, today you will be reading a real live letter from Henry Hudson from 1610!

No I'm just kidding... what we are really doing for this assignment (
number 10) is stepping in the shoes of a person who was involved in the pacific railways , some people are stepping into the shoes of the head person of the railways , some are being a Chinese who was sent to work on the railways.

For even more information on this assignment visit Miss Pollock's Blog introducing assignment 10.

I am an English explorer and have followed the paths along where Chinese people worked on the railways, In my travels I found some diaries and letter's from a great man known as: "Chen Li"

Note to readers: The italic words in the journals and letters are words you can look at in the glossary near the bottom if you are unclear to any words.

Also some language may be off sounding to today's modern language so example instead of it being isn't it will say is not.

Well here they are---

September 10th, 1881

Dear my sweet wife Lina and daughter Tao,
I just arrived in Canada, I am living in a tent outside the fair lands.
I have a Buddy sharing a tent with me he is a Chinese as well
and he is name Manchu he has been here since 1865 when they first sent the workers, he welcomes me but said the work is hard, i am a hard worker as you know but I am hoping it will not be too difficult. I herd we might have to use explosives but do not worry I will refuse to do that work and maybe help with the building of the railway it's self.

-Chen Li

Dear Diary,

I do not want to mention this to Lina and Tao because I will worry them.
So i am righting in you diary. The problem is the whites middle class workers get the choice of their jobs before we the Chinese can pick. Lots of Chinese are choosing the harder jobs because they want to show that they are hard workers. We only get half the pay as the whites middle class workers and we must work on dangerous jobs, building bridges, using explosives, it is my second day on the job and i am already felling homesick, I can not go home though and I must work really hard so i can bring my wife and daughter to Canada. I do not want them to worry of me working too hard and doing dangerous jobs but it pays so I hope I will Succeed with this, wish me luck diary!

-Chen

November 2oth, 1881

Hello Lina i hope Tao is fine.

Well I will send you another letter when I am good, I do not want to right when things are doing bad.

- Chen

October 30,1881
Today was a good day, I had a wondrous meal of dried salmon, rice and tea. I'm getting paid today so I am going to get to buy some fruit as I have saved enough now to buy some, but as I wish we get paid more are salary is so low these days, I hope if I work extra hard I might get a few more dollars or even a few more cents would be helpful. I don't think so though because winter is approaching.

Dear diary,

My boss David was really mean today, not that he is ever nice but he actually get so
mad at some one that the poor man was whipped so badly i felt so sorry from him, he didn't really deserve the hitting. He just failed to finish the work on time of the night passed. I must work hard today as David is yelling and yelling at us to work faster and faster. I didn't want to worry Lina and Tao again so i am writing in you because you make me fell well. I will right again soon but I here someone coming as I think it is my boss David.

Dear diary,

Oh how mad I am at David he was the who came to my tent and started to hit me and my roomie Manchu, he said we were not fit to be workers but I try my best and I think Manchu does to. He said this was are last warning or were will be hanged to death over the fire! This is so fighting I am scared to put these words in your pages Diary, just I must help calm myself down, as you are a really useful tool to use to make me happy again, you are the best diary i fell much better now, thanks.

-Chen

December 15th,1881

Hello to my Lina and Tao!
I finished the job of the bridge today it took about 2 weeks to build and finally now done, yay
I am assigned now to work on a 10 mile railway track and am starting that tomorrow.
Boy it takes tough men to do this job. Which I am one of them, as you know but it is tiring if you do it all day long, but I must keep going to bring you in my arms.

-Chen

January 12,1881

Dear Lina and Tao,

I am righting this quickly with saw dust in my eyes as today we are moving camps. As more of the railway is built we must move on to another camp site, so I will have to right you once we arrive in our knew place. It might take a while to get there so am hoping everything is good, is Tao better from her cold? Keep warm.

- Chen

February 14th,1881

Dear Lina and Tao,

I wish you the most of happiness today Lina because as you know today was the day we got married 10 years ago, it's our anniversary! Remember that night I asked you to marry me? You were so happy and I remember how your eyes looked so sparkly and filled with joy and remember when Tao came into the world? How happy you were then? Well as both those moments were I would like you to be like that today, filled with joy and tiers, not sad tiers toughs, happy tiers.
I wish this was not the way to celebrate with us apart but I can not help that, I will make it up to you when you and Tao can come to Canada. Hope you are having a better time than I am.
Boy I am Tired I had to walk 40km to get to the next camp sites to work more on the railway.
Well got to rest up and get back to work.

Loves you always,

-Chen

Dear Diary,
Terrible new diary my good friend Manchu from the railways died today. He was working on building a bridge over a steep gorge. He fell ,well working at noon, he was having such a great day today, it was his birthday, and he got to call home and talk to his wife and kids, then he had the fall. Why did he have to die so young, diary? Why is life got to be like this ? Why do white man got double the pay of Chinese and we work harder then them! Why Diary, why? Why did Manchu have to die? Why did I get sent here in the first place, why me? Why do I have to be away from my family? Why does David Harass me and other Chinese? And why are we the ones who have to work longer hours and get called names? Why the Chinese?I am truly sorry for nagging to you diary but I am truly sad today. You know diary you are the best person, book I should say, you are always there for me when I need you, and you really do cheer me up, Thanks again Diary. I hope life will go better soon for me,

-Yours truly, Chen your number 1 friend.

A buddy from the railway is helping me, he must work during the day but is able to help me at night, but i hope David will still accept that i must get better before I can work. I am truly sorry Tao i could bot be there on your birthday as I hoped to attend but I half to keep at the railway, I hope you get the money I sent to you and Lina, I know it is not much but before all the workers leave next week I will be getting more money and maybe we can do something for your birthday then, I picked up this lovely flower while I was working today it so reminded me of you my beautiful sweet Tao, it is the Chinese flower and will give you the best of luck since I can not be there today. ................................ ( got wet, so message earesed)

-----------------

I guess you get the picture of what happened to Chen li.

Yep, he died. How you might ask.

Well he died on his last day working on the railways, he got blown up in the tunnel parformaing a really risky task of putting Nitroglycerin and setting the charge. Explosives blow up easiely, if he sarvived he would of got more money half as a white man would of got, but still it was something, he was wanting it to buy something for his daugter's Tao late birthday. Poor fellow.

Why? You still might ask, well this is no story, it's life, I know you wish Chen could of returned
home and Lina and Tao will be really happy and they would go out for Tao's late birthday and
Tao and Lina will give Chen his surprise but this is not the way it happened.
I am sorry to those of you who like happy endings. The good news though is in 1888 Lina and Tao saved up enough money to imigrate to Canada, Lina then meet Robert and they had a son they named chen, after their beloved father and Husbien.

Send my reguards to the Li family,

-Annonmist ( I'm not putting my name of cource because I am still a mystery english explorer, remember??)

Why we should continue blogging

Hi to all!
Since we are almost finished history for the year, we are trying to diside if we should continue to blogging for geography. Here are the reasons I think we should keep blogging.

~ First of all i think it's less work for you(miss pollock) and the students.

I think it's less work because you don't have to teach the lesson, than do activites in class, than assignment homework and check it over the next day. We don't as well have to worry about tests either. On blogging we just read on our blogs what to do, than work on the assignments given in class and at home. So it's kind of combinding the work you normally do in class and homework.

It's a more creative and more fun way to do history

I personally like doing things more creative. Like when we have to do a project I would prefer doing it in a play form, instead of just reading text out to the class (As you know). Since you are the best, and that you are doing blogging with us, it's really the only chance we get to do history on the computer. Normally every other teacher and probally everyone else's Geography teacher has thought Geo. normally.

~ It's also a great way to practice and learn all the new things on the computer, and how to blog.

Most people I think haven't done blogging before so for most of us it's a new thing we are doing and figuring all the neat things you can do on your blogs. Also we don't have computer class this year so we also get to also use the computer's, when we blog.

~typing v.s. writing

A lot of people prefer to type their work ratter than wright their work, it's good with the new technology that we can type things on the computer. As you told us last year some people get so used to typing that there hand writing isn't good. Well since we only type things in history, it isn't a problem because we right in all are other classes. It's also great to keep practicing typing, because once you type more you can type faster and then it will help get things done faster.

~Not behind

What's good about blogging is if you miss a day or so of school, you won't be behind because you can just go on your computer at home and start the new assignment. I know what's it's like to be behind, and you have to catch up on all the work you missed when you were away, so this is really helpful. Then as well you don't have to ask the teacher or another student what you missed and copy notes.

~Printing

I found last year that a lot of people had problems with their printers (me included) or they didn't have a printers, so when we had work on the computer to type sometimes it was a problem. This kind of work on the computer is good because we can just submit it on our blogs instead of the whole printing hassle.

~Distractions

As you mentioned, some people find blogging distracting. I understand with people who say some of the temples are distracting. I think what they mean is it's a little hard on the eyes, because i found some a little hard to look at. With distractions from the widgets, i partly agreed but partly not. I think if you want to add a couple widgets to your blog it's fine, but if you have overly too much it can be distracting. With working habits distracting, that i disagree. I think people just have to be a bit more focesed wile working on their blogs and not get distractive. I think people can fix these things though. People with distracting templates can change them. If they really like their temple they can maybe find something simular to what they had before. For the widgets, people can not have a lot on their blogs, just a few. People who get distracted while working will have to try their bests to work on their assignments and once there done they can do other things like, adding more to their blogs or play games.

~class discussions

Class discussion might be a good thing to do.

To make things clearer and to share idea's and maybe read out assignments to each other, or a part of an assignments, or anything to share might a good idea.

Since blogging works better the more we communicate and share idea's together by communicating, by having class discussions it might help with this more.

Times for class discussions:

My idea's of times for class discussions,

E7/8 --- since we have history 3 times a week I think maybe once out of them we can have a class discussion, it depends if you were wanting it the whole class, of maybe half a class? One of those i think is good.

E8C--- I think they have history once a week so maybe a part of their class each week they can have some discussions, if you don't get to one week, then you can have some discussions the next week mabye.

I'm not sure about how many times your other classes should have class discussions, because i don't know how many times they have history each week, but i think you get the idea.

You can also maybe call a discussion random if you want to talk about sometime.

~Not wrong idea

~I am not saying that people who think we should go back to text books has the wrong opinions, I respect what they have to say, just i really think we should keep blogging for the reasons I gave.

I wonder what will happen??

p.s. If we do end up going back to textbooks, I would vote doing history like we did last year. Were we use different sources and other ways to learn history. It's more fun, but blogging is even better.

Bloked on school computers

Hello everyone!
I hope you are having fun blogging.

I know that some of the school computer's you can't play the impossible quiz because it's blocked. I took the link away and added the impossible quiz as a widget at the bottom of my blog, because i thought it will be easier. If the impossible quiz is blocked on your computer you will have to do it at home.

If you notice a large black space on assignment number 6, that's because I have 3 video's but there blocked from the school computer's as well.

Some of you may have noticed that my side bar is at the bottom instead of at the side.
I don't know why it's like that. Something that's not good about blogger, it can screw up sometimes.
If you click on older posts though the side bar returns to the top, wired I know, hopefully it will return to normal soon.
Thanks all for the corporations,
~Sarah
